Product Review: Cover Girl Outlast Lipstain

CC Outlast Lipstain
Product: Covergirl Outlast Lipstain Pen
Price: $7.99
Steph's Rating: Stephs Rating 3.5 Kisses
Buy it: Most Stores
Recommend: Maybe - personal preference

Covergirl introduces a new lip product called Outlast Lipstain.  Constructed in a pen like applicator to give you precise lining with no messy hassles, which you'll run into with most brands.

Description: The water-based colorants of Outlast Lipstain gives lips a beautiful, lightweight flush of color that won't come off, lasting for hours without the heavy look or feel of an ordinary lipstick.

Lipstain is becoming the new lipstick in the fashion and beauty world.  From your hollywood celebrities to your average beauty buyers - everyone's getting a piece of the action.

Although the lipstain process has yet to be perfected by any manufacture, Covergirl's new outlast does have some positive aspects.

Check out some pictures below.

Covergirl Outlast Lipstain

Pros:  In a pen like applicator for easy use and precise lining on the lips, so you don't have to worry about applying with your finger or dealing with the stain in your skin.  Offers a huge variety of 10 colorful shades ranging from light pink to dark reds.  If applied evenly, the color does last for quite sometime.  For a natural look, pick out a shade that's closest to your lip color.

Cons: The darker shades like Wild Berry may encounter some feathering issues on your lips. (Recommened: Dry lips?  Try preping or pre-treating with an exfoliation balm such as MAC's lip refinisher or Fresh's sugar lip treatment).  If not applied evenly, the color will settle towards the outer line of your lips.

With most "color stay or lip drying products" moisturization is the main key to eliminate that "dry cracked lip look".  At night, before bedtime, I'm always loading up on my carmex, vaseline or chapstick.  And when I'm not in a lipstick or gloss mood, you can count on chapstick almost always being on my lips.

 Cover Girl Outlast Lipstain

For me, the red cherry color of Wild Berry was intensely dark for my skintone.  Red is a hard shade to pull off in general, so I should've known to pick one that resembled my natural lip color more so.

Cover girl Outlast Lipstain

The pen like applicator is the best part of Covergirl's new Outlast lipstain.  Now only if they could perfect the formula a little better - we'd have a winner.

Outlast lipstains are now available at most stores and retail around $7.99/ea.

What color is on your nails in this picture? It is gorgeous!!!

Steph said on Dec 31st, 2008 2:16 am
Thanks Sarah! It's maybelline coco cabana - a brownish pink loaded with tons of gold shimmer - truley gorgeous! I found it at one of my local dollar trees. I'm hoping to do a NOTD soon :)

Vanessa, it might be worth a shot espically if you like color stay type products? :)

Hi Steph...I just bought the new cover girl lip stain and love it but wondering how you get it to work. I don't know how to get the color to go to the top of the tube?? Is there a trick or am I just not gettin' it. LOL. Thanks and love your site!

Steph said on Jan 5th, 2009 2:11 am
Hi Stephanie, On mine, the color pretty much stays at the top. So, you may possibly have an defective one? If that's the case I'd take it back and get another one b/c these are pretty pricey. In the meantine, try squeezing the sides and dabbing on a tissue paper until color comes out the top. Hopefully that helps :)

I have to say I love the lipstain since I apply lipbalm all day and I can apply it over this without the peeling from some long lasting lipsticks and I've gotten compliments on the colors every single day.

KatieE said on Jan 24th, 2009 2:28 am
Hey, if you're having trouble getting the color to go to the top of the tube, try storing the pen upside down so that all the color can reach the pen tip. Try doing this before you return it to the store and see if it works! :)

Thanks for the great suggestions LeeAnn and KatieE :)

I saw this lip stain advertised, and am dying to try it. I have looked at a couple of stores, and can't find it. My target, longs and walgreens don't have it yet.

I have looked at target, walmart & walgreens and I can't find it? I really would like to try it. :-)

Thanks for the review. I bought this in Plum Pout but, found the color was way too dark. I like this product but, I'm going to try another color in a lighter, more natural color.

Steph said on Feb 11th, 2009 9:41 am
Hi Debbie, Hopefully it's just a late bloomer in your location. I've seen this product in several stores around here. :) Hi T, Keep a look out. Hopefully their just late bloomers like Debbie. :) Hi Girl with Curl, That's exactly what happened to me! The lighter colors are much more suitable :)

Cathryn said on Feb 15th, 2009 11:23 am
I really like wild berry wink (the red one) and what I find works best with the really dark stains is to rub it into your lip after you apply it. The everbloom kiss one is really nice and it's light enough so that you don't have to rub it in however.

I have that outlast lipstain and I don't like it much. The color of the tube was lighter and I understand it doesnt have anything to do with the color inside. It is too loud and I can only think of using it as a lipliner. I am also worried that the felt tip may dry out soon. SO I have to keep using it. I bought it in a value pack along with strawberry splash lipgloss for $8. Love your blog.

I love the shades and am dying to try them out but dont really know where to get them... would they be available in India???

I did not like the product. I would not recommend it either.

I would like to try this product, but I am in the sun a lot and need to use SPF 30 such as Chapstick over my lipstick. Will this work or will it cause problems with the stain?

Aisha said on Jul 5th, 2009 1:56 am
I just saw this at a local drug store (CVS Pharmacy for folks in the midwest) and bought it out of curiosity. I love it! I have not found it drying, so give it a shot, it isn't drying for everyone. It has such a nice fruity taste, too. I picked a very natural looking tone (based on the tube color) and it's pretty bright in real life, but still within a conservative enough range that I can happily wear it to work. Just note that the tubes are misleading. Pick the dullest looking shade and you'll get a colorful, pretty stain when you actually wear it.

I purchased the Outlast Lipstain Pen because I have a problem with lip color lasting. This didn\'t either. In fact it came off quicker than other lip products I have tried. I would like to return it for a refund. I do not have a receipt. Thanks!

Catherine Willner said on Jul 19th, 2009 12:08 pm
How do you get the color off your fingertips? I found that it was absolutely necessary to use my finger to smooth it on...

Dawn said on Jul 20th, 2009 7:44 pm
I bought a very bright color and it went on very bright but withing 20 minutes it was almost gone. It left only a faint color. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I guess I will keep trying.

Ami said on Jul 22nd, 2009 1:43 pm
I found this lipstain does not work at all within 10 mins it was all gone off my lips, I travel alot and I have been trying to find a product that works , this does not. Covergirl usually does a good job, they let us down this time

maureen said on Aug 6th, 2009 1:35 pm
I tried the lipstain and was disappointed because the color did not last a good half hour. I do not think I applied it wrong, how hard is it to apply something to your lips. I bought it at a Target and will try to return it, as I feel i have wasted $8.00.

Malinda said on Aug 7th, 2009 7:35 am
I really thought this was going to be the best, especially for the price. But it is just like all the others. It just doesn\'t last. CVS has a 100 percent guarantee on all there products SO, I think I am going to take it back.

Jessi said on Aug 20th, 2009 10:05 am
I bought the brown tint last night and I think it workes great! Wonderful to line the lips so easily and have it last. I ate dinner, and the stain was still very visible. I would say try it out, but be careful on your color choice!

Anne Whitridge said on Aug 21st, 2009 5:53 pm
I also am having trouble getting the color to the tip. Any suggestions other than what's already on here?

Sierra said on Aug 28th, 2009 12:44 am
I was extremely disappointed with this product :/ I was dying to try it because sometimes my lipgloss will start cracking and peeling throughout the day and it drives me crazy...I figured a stain would stay on better, but it didn't at all! I put it on and within less than a minute, almost all the color was gone. What was left was just splotchy bits on the outer corners of my bottom lip, I don't even know where the rest of it disappeared to! So yeah, in my opinion....don't waste a perfectly good $7, just buy some Wet'n'Wild Megaslicks >.> I wore that on prom night and it stayed on through the whole night. ;]

Loved the concept of this stuff, however. thus far have been incredibly dissapointed. The first one I bought, (not cheap at $8 plus), ran dry immediately. I thought I had a bad pen. So, then I naively bought 2 more in different shades. Also, bone dry, from Wal Mart. I am very frustrated, and feel that covergirl cosmetics owe me about $25, plus tax. Off course, I cant get on to the site to complain, as they keep rejecting my e mail address. I feel incredibly ripped off. Might as well grab one of your kids felt pens and have at it! Save you $8 plus tax. This stuff is crap!

Like the lip color. Just doesn't stay on.

Interesting but what colors are there for women of color? Are there colors that blend in on darker lips.

Coni said on Sep 14th, 2009 8:23 am
Not impressed at all! It tastes like candy and doesn't stay on at all....... it's sugar water.

I love my lip stain!! I use Flirty Nude, it is the best!

Sandra said on Oct 10th, 2009 8:34 am
I did not like the lipstain at all. It did not stay on and tasted awful when I licked my lips. The color came off on my tongue and did not disappear for quite some time. I would not recommend this product to anyone. CoverGirls website was not working either so I was unable to email them about this problem. Very disappointing.

Love the concept behind lip stain, but unfortunately it doesn\'t stay on long--less than a minute after application, it completely disappeared and it was like applying the lipstick had been a complete figment of my imagination. Maybe my lips absorbed the color fast or something, IDK... You may as well be applying washable Crayola markers to your lips! (which I\'m sure many of us tried at some point or another when we were kids)

Hi Steph,
Love your blog. You wrote: Always wrap the free edge or tip throughout each step. I didn't see this step in the video. Could you please explain how to do the wrap process and with what material. Thank you.

I am wondering if these gel polishes can be used with other gels. I have a different system with a different brand of base coat and top coat, can the different brands of gel mix?

I've had my kit for a couple of months now and love the way it lasts; but the Structure and Brilliance brushes are starting to stiffen and so is the gel in the bottles. Anyone else having that issue? Is there a way to thin them out?

Jill said, on Aug 8th, 2012 5:47 pm regarding Product Review: Red Carpet Manicure Pro Kit
Hi, does anyone know if I can thin out the red carpet base coat so that it is easier to apply?

Hi Prinzy,
It was a gorgeous color! I remember picking up a few bottles because I loved the color so much! lol! Actually, yes, I'm launching a store in the next couple of weeks. I have everything built, I'm just working on the Terms and Conditions right now, so it should be very, very soon.

I only have about 10 Studio M colors in the store currently, but I will be taking special pre-orders once it opens.

Hi Sarah,
I'm not sure about retail stores, but you can still find them on

Can I still buy them in the stores now?

I've been playing with this system for about a month now. I love it! When I first started I used the clear just so I could get a feel for it. Then I got adventurous and tried a "sandwich" with a China Glaze color. It probably would have stayed on longer if I had been able to seal off the edges, but my nails were so short it was a bit difficult. The next time I used RCM gel polish in Simply Stunning (a pale slightly shimmery nude color). This time I had gotten enough practice to really make my coats thin and it worked out fabulous. I'm trying to send all my friends the Ulta 20% coupon (5/26 is the last day) so they can get a kit for about $64. :) Now I hope to get a little creative with color combos and nail design. Thanks for the review.
