Last week I tweeted about the uncanny resemblance between Essie's North Fork Collection and Loreal's most recent one, Passport to Paradise for summer 2010. After swatching both brands, I was completely convinced that these were indeed the same colors. Women's Wear Daily sealed the deal this afternoon by announcing L'oreal's big acquisition of Essie Cosmetics. Mystery solved!
Even though we have dupes here, the formula wasn't up to par like Essie's. I found each color to be a little on the thick side, specifically Waters Edge. You can always add a few drops of nail polish thinner to help with the application.
I cannot stress this enough, please DO NOT use nail polish remover as thinner. It can and will destroy your favorite shade. A few brands I recommend: Seche Restore, Zoya Renew and Beauty Secrets (Sally Beauty). It's frightening to see all the misleading information on the web.
Check out the swatches!
Waters Edge, the problem child of the bunch, a creamy, medium aquamarine. It leans more towards a teal/green. This one was thick, very thick and almost gooey. Now, where did I put that dang polish thinner (not remover)?!
High Tide - is a grayed out powder blue with shimmer, very subtle.
Ocean Breeze - is a bright sky blue. The formula is thin and a bit jelly-like.
The comparisons pretty much speak for themselves. Check them out!
(L-R) Loreal Waters Edge, Essie Greenport and Loreal Ocean Breeze, Essie Shelter Island.
(L-R) Loreal High Tide and Essie Sag Harbor.
Overall, Great Collection. If you missed out on the popular and sold-out North Fork Collection, this is a great opportunity to get your hands on exact dupes. Formula is a little finicky, but not too bad.
Passport to Paradise is now available in stores. What do you guys think? Have you seen the new Loreal's in your area?

those are gorgeous. water's edge is what i wanted hard candy's 'frenzy' to be. i emailed my fred meyers to see when it would be in stock and she said it would be a couple of weeks. i'm psyched about these colors! and i'm really interested to see what colors loreal comes out with after taking over essie! did you get either one of the glosses? this is just beautiful for summer.

Wow, I had *no* idea they were that close, glad I picked them up at my Rite Aid! Thanks for the tip on the thinner for Water's Edge!

Yay! I just updated my post to link to this. WOW. They are all exact dupes. How crazy is that? Thank you so much for posting this! PS: Would you say that Waters Edge is a close dupe for For Audrey? I have yet to purchase For Audrey but I'm hoping now that I really don't need to. :)

Hi Recessionista,
Thanks so much for the link doll!! I would say For Audrey is much different. It's more pastel-y (has that milkiness) and bluer. Waters Edge is more of a ocean green/teal. Both colors are really fab, so that's a toughie!
If you don't own any Tiffany Blue polishes (Diamond Cosmetics In a Tiff, Orly Gum Drop, Chanel Nouvelle Vague, Ginger + Liz Boy Toy) it's worth picking up China Glaze For Audrey. It's one of my top faves :)

I missed out on the essie collection so I hope I can find these - I really like them! I just hope my local drugstores get it in stock soon.. I'm on the east coast and it seems we are always behind the west when it comes to stocking new seasonal displays!

Hi Jackie,
Hopefully not by much..! To my knowledge, Essie Weingarten is on board with L'oreal for years to come!

After seeing all your swatches, I'll have to go back and pick up Ocean Breeze. Stef - your thoughts - with Loreal taking over Essie, do you think Essie's great formula will change? Some of their reds are one coaters and highly glossed. Thank you.

Sandy,
Ocean Breeze is really pretty, it's a little thin and jelly-ish formula wise - but a great color! Hopefully Essie's formula stays the same and L'oreal gets a better brush! It would be awesome to see some old HTF Essie colors (Dominica Green, Starry Starry Night, Ruby Slippers) from L'oreal in the future.
