Coco Chanel’s iconic style was a study in contrasts. She boldly mixed black and white, masculine and feminine, classic and modern. Paying tribute to her unique vision, Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, has created a makeup collection for Fall 2010 that brings bold emphasis to the eyes, and keeps lips soft and delicate.

Just as we're getting used to Summer, along comes Les Contrastes De Chanel for Fall/Autumn 2010. The makeup collection features bold shades of chocolate grey, plums, and khaki with a soft touch of peach and pink to compliment the look.

Are you guys ready to check out the nail colors? Take a jump below!

Chanel Jade Rose Nail Polish

Chanel Fall 2010 Nail Polish Collection

Chanel welcomes back Jade Rose, a perfect neutral to go along with Paradoxal. It's a dusty pink with a hint of subtle shimmer.

Chanel Paradoxal Nail Polish

Chanel Fall 2010 Nail Collection

Paradoxal, the one I was most curious about... And of course, nothing like the promotional pictures we saw online. Mostly you'll see a muted or even dull overcast of violet gray, and in other lighting a flash of purple shimmer that is very subtle on the nail. Very chic!

No complaints with the formula, it's practically flawless in two coats. Check out a bottle comparison below.

Plummy Nail Polish Bottle Comparisons

To give you an idea where Paradoxal falls, here's a bottle line up of purple, plum and shades of mauve from my stash.

Chanel Paradoxal Nail Comparisons

When you first look at Paradoxal the color is really deceiving. It looks like your typical Metro Chic with a hint shimmer, but the comparisons prove otherwise. The closest I have is Jessica's Venus Was Her Name, which has more blue undertones like Nicole's Bah Plum Bug. Shimmering Bark is a mauve version from CQ or Petites (same manufacturer) with subtle reddish pink shimmer like Paradoxal.

Final Thoughts. The definite winner and sure to be a hit, Paradoxal. With its dual tonal colors switching from gray to plum to purple, and flat like finish with peek-a-boo shimmer is in a class of its own. Odd, peculiar, different - I'm totally digging it. Jade Rose is a nice neutral if you're looking for a soft nude or wearable office color, but we've been there done that.

What do you think of Paradoxal? Does it live up to everyone's expectations? Have a wonderful Thursday and 4th of July weekend!

Ok, someone please make a dupe of Paradoxal now so I don't have to spend so much on a single polish! Please?!?

I think I can pass on Jade Rose, but I think I need Paradoxal! :-) So pretty! By the way, I started a nail blog, and would love to have you follow. If you're interested. :-)

Thanks so much for the beautiful swatches! I plan on picking this one up within the next couple of days. I love Chanel polish and I want to check out their new lip glosses as well - I hear they are gorgeous! Thanks, Steph!

I love paradoxal on you. Your picture is the best I've seen yet!! Can't wait to swatch it! :) Oh is it close to Nars purple rain I don't have it to compare.

Steph said on Jul 2nd, 2010 7:02 am
Thanks rmcandlelight,
No, it's much different. Nars Purple Rain is much deeper and noticeably purple.

Nancy said on Jul 1st, 2010 6:48 pm
I agree with rmcandlelight, your pictures are the best I've seen too.... Not completely purple or gray. Thanks!

Wow, what an interesting color.... I totally get what you mean by it looks like Metro Chic, but so different too!

Steph said on Jul 2nd, 2010 7:27 am
Hi Jess,
It's very interesting to say the least.. and almost impossible to capture the precise color!

I bought Jade Rose the first time around, I'm not crazy about it with my skin tone. Paradoxal is on it's way to me, it looks gorgeous!

Paradoxal reminds me of the bew BB Couture Incognito. I don't know if they're similar at all since I don't have the Chanel, but they look close to me.

Steph said on Jul 2nd, 2010 7:22 am
Hi Regina,
I don't personally own BB Incognito, judging by the pictures online it looks much more gray compared to Paradoxal but I can't say for sure. It's definitely in the same family

Thanks for the swatches!

Paradoxal reminds me of a darker version of "Zara" by Zoya. Pretty! =)

I'm wondering if Model's Own Purple Grey would be a close dupe. I own the Purple Grey but haven't tried it out yet.

I must say it looks like Incognito to me.

Do you have any hints for taking good pictures of nails? I know it has a lot to do with bad lighting in here but all I'm getting is blurry shots when i try to capture the designs I try. What setting works best, and what's the best alternative to sunlight?

Steph said on Jul 12th, 2010 9:40 am
Hi Jenna,
Do you have a macro setting on your camera? This setting allows you to change from the standard focus to capture up close objects. On most digital cameras it's usually a flower symbol and may be located on the back of the camera. This is a crucial step for capturing perfect images.

As far as the sunlight, I wish I had better news for you, but I don't. I've experimented with different types of lighting and light boxes, and in my opinion nothing is accurate as pure sunlight.

My suggestion would be to practice taking shots in different areas of your house or apartment and go from there. You can also try goggling DIY light box, there are some great alternatives online. Hope that Helps!

Love, love, love Paradoxal! I have had it on my fingers and toes for less then a week and receive compliments everyday. I usually wear sheer colors on my fingers. Do you like Jade Rose better than Allegoria or Django? It is hard to judge the swatches on Neiman's website.

Hi Steph,
Love your blog. You wrote: Always wrap the free edge or tip throughout each step. I didn't see this step in the video. Could you please explain how to do the wrap process and with what material. Thank you.

I am wondering if these gel polishes can be used with other gels. I have a different system with a different brand of base coat and top coat, can the different brands of gel mix?

I've had my kit for a couple of months now and love the way it lasts; but the Structure and Brilliance brushes are starting to stiffen and so is the gel in the bottles. Anyone else having that issue? Is there a way to thin them out?

Hi, does anyone know if I can thin out the red carpet base coat so that it is easier to apply?

Hi Prinzy,
It was a gorgeous color! I remember picking up a few bottles because I loved the color so much! lol! Actually, yes, I'm launching a store in the next couple of weeks. I have everything built, I'm just working on the Terms and Conditions right now, so it should be very, very soon.

I only have about 10 Studio M colors in the store currently, but I will be taking special pre-orders once it opens.

Hi Sarah,
I'm not sure about retail stores, but you can still find them on

Can I still buy them in the stores now?

I've been playing with this system for about a month now. I love it! When I first started I used the clear just so I could get a feel for it. Then I got adventurous and tried a "sandwich" with a China Glaze color. It probably would have stayed on longer if I had been able to seal off the edges, but my nails were so short it was a bit difficult. The next time I used RCM gel polish in Simply Stunning (a pale slightly shimmery nude color). This time I had gotten enough practice to really make my coats thin and it worked out fabulous. I'm trying to send all my friends the Ulta 20% coupon (5/26 is the last day) so they can get a kit for about $64. :) Now I hope to get a little creative with color combos and nail design. Thanks for the review.
