Orly Cosmic FX Collection for Fall 2010

Orly Cosmic FX Collection

Collection: Orly Cosmic FX Collection, Nail Lacquer .5 oz
Retail Price: $10.00/ea and lower
Steph's Rating: Steph's 4.5 Kisses Rating
Big 3 Free: Yes
Buy it: e-tailers, Sally Beauty, Ulta, OrlyBeauty.com

Launching this month into September, Orly introduces Cosmic FX, a space themed Collection for Fall.  This new, limited-edition release delivers multi-dimensional flashes of intense shimmering shine that is so electrifying your nails will explode with color! The lighting phenomenon is achieved by ORLY’s exclusive MINERALFX technology.

Orly Says, "The MINERALFX technology includes specialty mica, that allows for a clearer, vibrantly bright lustrous shimmer. Crystals allow for a multi-dimensional color transformation. Glass particles carefully controlled in shape and size create a luminous phenomenon. This combination infused with the Silica and specific colors selected create this exclusive technology that gives nails a unique optical effect that’s magnified as the lighting source intensifies or viewing angle changes."

Each bottle from Cosmic FX comes in a special edition black cap, a personal favorite of mine. The formula applies semi sheer with bulidable coverage; three coats for full opacity.

Since we're dealing with glittery glass flecks in a jelly base, chances of dragging color may be lurking around the corner. No biggie! Just be sure each layer dries completely before reapplying.

Check out the swatches!

Orly It's Not Rocket Science

Orly Cosmic FX Collection Fall 2010

It's Not Rocket Science - is a mossy green with green and gold flecks.

Orly Halley's Comet Nail Polish

Orly Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Collection

Halley's Comet - is in a turquoise base with flecks of blue and green. The mermaid green really shines through with thicker layers. Zoya's Charla and OPI's Catch Me In Your Net are close matches.

Orly Galaxy Girl Nail Polish

Orly Galaxy Girl Nail Polish

Galaxy Girl reminds me of an old favorite from Maybelline Express Finish called, Vanishing Venus. It's a deep purple plum with blue and green iridescent like glass flecks.

Orly Lunar Eclipse Nail Polish

Orly Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Collection

Lunar Eclipse - is a bold blue with flashes of pink and purple. It's a little bit darker compared to Sally Hansen's Laser, but with better coverage.

Orly Out of This World Nail Polish

Orly Cosmic FX Collection

Out of This World - is in a deep purple blue base with purple, pink and gold flecks. Looking at the bottle the duochrome effect is very strong, but not so much on the nail. Again, it really depends on the lighting. I have better luck in shaded or indoors areas.

Orly Space Cadet Nail Polish

Orly Cosmic FX Collection Fall

Seriously, there's no easy way to describe Space Cadet. The base starts out as a teal blue, but soon disappears and is overwhelmed by a combination of pink, purple and gold flecks. Absolutely gorgeous! It's certainly worthy enough for a back up.

Check out a duochrome view of Space Cadet.

Duochrome Qualities of Orly Space Cadet

In the picture above, Space Cadet is layered over navy blue and you can see the pink/purple/gold duochrome features. Isn't it Fabulous?!

Overall - For a moment let's put aside that Lunar Eclipse and Halley's Comet have relatives. As a whole, Orly's Cosmic FX did not disappoint me. Glass Flecks, Duchrome Effect, Foil-y Finish - everything I love!

My favorites: Space Cadet (buy two!), Out of This World, Galaxy Girl and It's Not Rocket Science.

After the anticipation and seeing all the swatches this week, are you guys still excited? What's everyone's favorite?

I love all of them. I am not buying It's Not Rocket Science cause I have Optical Illusion already. The rest are a must. What a great collection!!! Best of Fall 2010 in my opinion. Thanks so much for the swatches!

All of those look like winners to me, especially Space Cadet! I wish the price tag were not so high.

Hey pretty lady! Just letting you know, Out of This World is a Zoya Julieanne dupe. I swatched them side by side on my blog. Also I've heard that It's Not Rocket Science is at least a cousin to one of the China Glaze Halloween polishes and that Galaxy Girl and Space Cadet have twins coming in the MAC Venomous Villains collection.

I need all of these! I think I will be out of town during the launch, I hope they\'re not sold out by the time I get back!

Cadet and G Girl look good. But that\'s quite expensive and they\'re hard to find in the UK anyway. So, unless I chance upon them one day on ebay going cheap, I'm out.

These look lovely, but most of them have dupes. I purchased Space Cadet and Galaxy Girl; I think they're the most unique.

I've read on other blogs that this collection is running @ $10/ea, but they're only $8.50 at Sally's. They sent out a flier with a 20% off, so I was able to pick up BOTH Halley's Comet AND Galaxy Girl!!!

It was this collection that made me pay attention to Orly. I had heard about them before, but this was the first time they created a lemming for me! A while ago, I bought 4 from the collection - it would've been 5, but at the time, Space Cadet was sold out. Now Trans Design has jacked up the price from $5 to $10. Good thing I got them when they were still $5. As always, your swatches are excellent. Whenever I think about buying a colour, I like to search your site to see if you've swatched them because it helps me decide. :)

Hi Steph,
Love your blog. You wrote: Always wrap the free edge or tip throughout each step. I didn't see this step in the video. Could you please explain how to do the wrap process and with what material. Thank you.

I am wondering if these gel polishes can be used with other gels. I have a different system with a different brand of base coat and top coat, can the different brands of gel mix?

I've had my kit for a couple of months now and love the way it lasts; but the Structure and Brilliance brushes are starting to stiffen and so is the gel in the bottles. Anyone else having that issue? Is there a way to thin them out?

Hi, does anyone know if I can thin out the red carpet base coat so that it is easier to apply?

Hi Prinzy,
It was a gorgeous color! I remember picking up a few bottles because I loved the color so much! lol! Actually, yes, I'm launching a store in the next couple of weeks. I have everything built, I'm just working on the Terms and Conditions right now, so it should be very, very soon.

I only have about 10 Studio M colors in the store currently, but I will be taking special pre-orders once it opens.

Hi Sarah,
I'm not sure about retail stores, but you can still find them on amazon.com.

Can I still buy them in the stores now?

I've been playing with this system for about a month now. I love it! When I first started I used the clear just so I could get a feel for it. Then I got adventurous and tried a "sandwich" with a China Glaze color. It probably would have stayed on longer if I had been able to seal off the edges, but my nails were so short it was a bit difficult. The next time I used RCM gel polish in Simply Stunning (a pale slightly shimmery nude color). This time I had gotten enough practice to really make my coats thin and it worked out fabulous. I'm trying to send all my friends the Ulta 20% coupon (5/26 is the last day) so they can get a kit for about $64. :) Now I hope to get a little creative with color combos and nail design. Thanks for the review.
